Broken brifter?

The brifter on my dad's is possibly broken. You can push it all the way to the side to shift but it just never "clicks" and shifts. It's for the front. I think i pushed it too far one day, is it broken? Do i need to buy a new one or can i fix this one?

To save some time:
What brand?
What model?
What condition/age?

Pushing too far shouldn't have broke it but who knows? It could be really dirty. Cable could be jammed, gunked up, kinked or any number of things. If it's truly broken, then it will likely need replacing.

Shimano doesn't sell replacement parts for their brifters, so fixing them is difficult. Some LBS do it, but it would most likely cost you more than a new one.

Well it worked when I brought it home so I'm pretty sure it was user error. I guess i just pushed it too far in the opposite way that it should have gone, noob error. Thanks for the help gents.

If you bought it from a dealer take it back and let them work on it, and find out what happened.
