Shimano Shifter Question

This is my first post in the mechanics forum, so pardon my ignorance.

My wife hates the Shimano EF60 shifters that came on her Trek FX 7.3 WSD (poor trigger / lever location), but likes the ML-580 shifters on my FX 7.5.

Will XL ML580 (9 speed) shifters work in conjuction with the 3x8 Shimano drivetrain on her FX 7.3 WSD? I realize that there would be an un-used position on the right side shifter, but would the indexing work correctly?

Is there a better solution available?

No, the cog spacing is different between 8-speed and 9-speed. You could probably make it work with a JTek Shiftmate, but a better solution would be to replace the shifters, cassette, and chain with 9-speed components to make her drivetrain as good as yours.

Near the bottom of this page under "Alternate Cable Routing" you will find instructions for making a 9 sp shifter work on an 8 cog cassette. I have used it successfully to make an 8 sp Sora work with a 7 sp cassette. http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html

Al,

Thanks for the response; I was afraid that was the answer.

The chainring teeth on the FX 7.3 triple measure the same thickness as on the FX 7.5 triple, so your suggestion to replace the shifters, cassette, and chain with 9-speed components makes sense.

FWIW, I wanted SWMBO to get the 7.5 WSD, but she liked the color of the 7.3!

Andrew,

Thanks for the tip.
