One Piece to Three Piece Crank Conversion

I have the BB and I'm ready to get some square tapered cranks. Did some Sheldonresearch and now I'm really confused! What brand/style of crank will fit? It has a nut on the end of the spindle not a bolt. The square tapered part is about 18mm long and 10mm wide. I already spent my AIG bonus on this bike!

Bolt or nut doesn't really make a difference. It is all about the length of the shaft (isn't that always the way). Any square taper crankset should fit but the chainline may be an issue if the shaft isn't the right length.

Yes I'm not a fan of that type with a nut screwing onto a thread on the end of the axle but it works. You will need a special socket with very thin walls to tighten and loosen it but it works fine.

Nope- the nut takes any standard 14mm socket. Some very good quality crankarm bolts take a 15mm socket with thin walls, but those are pretty rare.

The nut is fine but the cranks are the problem. My experience with several bikes with a BB axle like that is that my standard socket won't fit. I have to go to a bike shop and borrow there specific tool to get them off. Your milage may vary. It will depend on the crank arms you are fitting.

ive just bought a silverline 14mm socket for my bb.
they are a brand of cheap tools
not bike specific
the sides of the socket have a step in them.
so just go to any tool shop or ebay and look for a socket that has a stepped sides
