Mavic Freehubs...
 

Scratching my head here guys. I just purchased a new Shimano freehub to replace my worn out one on my Ksyrium ES wheelset. The new one is Shimano splined but is a tad shorter than the original freehub. My 10 speed cassette will only tighten up correctly if I leave out one of the spacers but then of course my shifting is all messed up. I was not even aware that Mavic offered different width Shimano freehubs. Can anyone shed some light on what I have and if it is at all usable? New one is on the left...

at a guess... you got sold an 8/9 speed freehub rather than a 9/10

There was a thread somewhere about the difference between a 9 spd hub before 10s were made, and a new 10 hub....

Seems like yours is a little too short...

I just picked up a set of Mavics, had to run a spacer (included) with 9 speed, definitely not the same as yours.

Leave out the spacer; open up the limits; trim the deraileur so that it shifts properly; re-adjust the limits based on the new trim.

Mavic wheels/hubs generally come with a spacer because Mavic cassettes are wider than Shimano cassettes. Your new freehub appears to be Shimano-only, so the spacer is no longer used (you also now can't run a Mavic cassette--not that you were going to).

Problem is if you look, the spacing at the rear of the new freehub is the same as the old one so if you do not use both spacers the cogs will all be closer to the center of the wheel then it was. That would make wheel swapping impossible without deraileur adjusting everytime. I *think* it is may simply be an 8 speed hub that I got.....

That's where I am with this. The hub on my new Mavic wheels was *longer* than the Shimano hub on the wheels I had, necessitating the use of a spacer with a 9 speed cassette that wasn't necessary on the Shimano hub.

Huh? 8,9, and 10 use the same freehub for Shimano. There was a 10 speed specific.

Looks more like he was sold a 7 speed freehub.

I did go by the shop yesterday and did find the right one last night. Still not sure exactly what it was that I had but problem solved. Thanks for the input guys.

I seems that the cassette body is a dedicated shimano 8/9/10 model rather than the M10 model that is longer so mavic cogs can be used, even with wider campy spacing. The thin 10 speed spacer would still be required, just like it would on a shimano 8/9/10 hub.

While the lack of spacers would move the cassette to the left, that's only a problem for those having the M10 on another wheelset and wanting to swap wheels.
