Clicking noise from handlebar or headset?

Looked at Sheldons site but not much info.

I get a click ONLY when I get out of the saddle for climbing, and especially when I tend to pull on the hoods. Happens with each 'pull' on either side. Its either from the handlebar or the steerer or somewhere there abouts. Any suggestions?

Could be anything up there - I'd start taking stuff apart and greasing. Grease the interface between the stem and bars, make sure the headset's tight, check for housing slap on the frame tubes, tighten brifter clamps, etc.

Just tracked this down for a teammate the other day. Greased the headset and it was silent thereafter.

Thanks guys. Will make a start with headset. Are you sure you need to apply grease between the bar and the stem? Wont it lead to loss of grip between the two?

The headset is the only safety issue. Everything else is just annoying. Check to make sure there is no play in the fork.

Virtually all clicks at this end of the bike are purely superficial. My brake hoods click like crazy when I push and pull when climbing, probably because some sweat and salt got in there. The sticky side of the handlebar tape can also click as the handlebars flex. The stem connector bolts can click if the grease on the threads does something funny...etc...etc...

Wow, is that true? I have the same clicking noise after doing a full overhaul and rebuild on my bike. I never touched the headset, but I did all new brake cables and housings and new bar tape. The tape was specialized S tape (not really adhesive on the back but somewhat sticky), and it's cork tape.

I'm not really annoyed, I think the sound is actually kind of cool, just wondering where it was coming from. Also, this is the first time I've run without my lever hoods (old school diacompe grand compe levers), I don't know it that can have anything to do with it.

So add this to the cause for handle bar clicking. The noise was getting progressively worse over the past two weeks and it was driving me nuts. I took apart and greased the bottom bracket and pedals, completely regreased the stem, bolds, spacers, headset screw, twice. Greased the brake cable housing. Retightened the QR's.

Finally, last night, I'm looking at the front fork and I notice that the QR handles are sitting at about 1 o'clock and sitting on top of the fork. I moved the QR handle to 3 o'clock and off the fork and voilla! I love the sound of silence.
