Do I really need to cut my wheel skewers?

I have a set of OnGuard wheel skewers.

The instruction manual says "To ensure maximum security and safety, trim off the excess length on your OnGuard axles"

I'm not sure how long I'll have my bike for, maybe less then a year, and so I was thinking about not cutting the extra bit sticking out.

So I was wondering how much safety am I sacrificing? and how much less secured will the bike wheels be?
Is there any validity to their statement?

The wheels won't be any less secure. If you fall on it, it could leave a pretty nasty tear though. You can cap it with those little rubber caps from fender struts to make it safer without cutting it.

It's not the security you have to worry about. The safety concern is that the excess threaded end of the skewer rod sticking out of the nut is a cut hazard. If you spill and the skewer end goes over your leg, it can make a nasty wound. I'd cut off the excess flush with the end of the nut and file it smooth.

Just installed them. The front looks just like the picutre, the rubber cap covers what little stuck out. The back has about half an inch sticking out with the rubber cap covering most of it.

From the looks of it's no where as bad as I thought it would be and is very subtle. Thanks for the feedback guys.
