Gary Bar and Brifters?
 

Is the hand position too awkward, or is it doable? I just got my bar in from Niagara, and want to put it on my modernized Gran Turismo. It kind of seems like the rounded profile of the hoods would interfere with hand comfort, if they were used like on a moustache bar. Is it also possible working the shift lever might be a little more difficult? Maybe not if your hands are at the same angle? I'm just wanting to know before I go through the hassle of installing them.Show some pictures if you've got the same combo!?! If it won't work I have about 5-10 other DT shifter bikes I could use them on. So far I like the feel of them, and the wide width.,,,,BD

If all else fails, my Trek 990 would look pretty cool sporting a set of drops....:D

It all depends on how you have them set up, if you have them in the 'classic' position, intended primarily for use from the drops, the hoods shouldn't matter, because you aren't going to be riding in them.

If you like a position that's more of a compromise, and you mount the hoods in a higher position (but not so high as to compromise braking from the drops) it can get a little awkward. I've found I like the angle of the hoods, but it might take a bit of getting used to.

I'll post a pic of my bike later (although it has command shifters at the moment), the idea still stands

Thanks! Got it done Sunday evening, and rode it to work Monday. On the way there I got a little sore in the meaty muscles at the base of my thumbs. On my way home it poured on me the WHOLE way, so I didn't notice it that much. Just have to get used to them a bit, as they have a new hand position I'm not used to. I do like them quite a bit, and the hoods can be used as well. Happy with the purchase:D.

Thanks for the pictures. I have a pair of Gary bars waiting for the frame to come, and I'm hoping to eventually use them for some touring. Not sure if the drop will be deep enough but we'll see I guess.

I like them, although I don't know if I would recommend them for touring. The drops are emphasized a lot more, the hoods are a little awkward, and the tops are kinda cramped. Compared to a normal drop bar, you probably have fewer hand positions.

As well, I don't know if I would recommend Command Shifters with them either. You can shift great from the hoods, and upshift the rear very well from the drops, but it's almost impossible to downshift the rear derailer from the drops. Not a bad idea on a road bike, after all, if you need to go faster, you're probably already in the drops.

On these bars, because your primary position is in the drops, it can be a bit problematic, especially when your trying to climb offroad. You get great leveradge from the drops, but have to take a hand off if you want to shift.
