shimano brifter compatibility

I have ten year old Shimano 105 brifters, 8 speed cassette, double chainring. I'm having some serious issues with cable replacement. Ahhhh! Thus, looking ahead...

Can I get any level of Shimano brifters for double/8 speed? I don't want to start switching cassettes, etc. I'd like to just replace the brifters, if necessary. Not easy to find 105s, so was wondering if Dura Ace, Ultegra, etc. would be compatible.

If you can find older 8-speed Dura Ace or Ultegra shifter they would work with your set up.
You can also use Sora 8 speed shifter from a few years ago which work pretty good or even some Shimano 2200 level shifters, but they kind of lack in the performance department.

Sora 8 speed is still available from J&B Importers (wholesaler). Ebay usually has a few sets every once in a while, too.

You actually cannot use 8 speed Dura Ace with a 105 rear derailleur. Dura Ace 8 speed rear shifters and rear derailleurs only work with each other. The front derailleur and shifter will work with any other shimano exept for Dura Ace 7900 though.

When replacing 8-speed Shimano shifters it's best to convert to 9-speed or even 10-speed components. With the exception of 8-speed D-A you can run the old 8-speed derailleurs with new 9-speed or probably 10-speed shifters, cassette, and chain. 9 and 10-speed cassettes will fit the 8-speed hub.
