SLX Crankset installation
Hello,
I just had to replace a LX crank with a SLX, but didn't change the bottom bracket yet, because the one I had is fine. The question I have is the left crank arm on the LX crank had a washer or spacer between it and the bottom bracket, but the SLX didn't come with one and when I tried to use the one from the LX it seems like the crank arm didn't go on the spindle far enough. Does anyone know if that is need on the SLX? I have ridden it and there is no rubbbing or noise coming from it and it rides super smooth. Thanks! |
I'm contemplating a similar change so am interested in what you find out.

All the exploded views and instructions can be found here:

But Shimano does not give any dimensions so for OP question those diagrams are not giving an answer.
Hollowtech II is supposed to be standardized so any MTB Hollowtech II bearings should be interchangeable (Deore, LX, SLX, Deore XT, XTR). Maybe the thickness of LX left crank arm (measured at the axle hole) plus the thickness of the LX spacer equals the thickness of SLX left crank arm. I have an SLX crankset and it does not have those spacers that LX crankset has (on both sides). |
I have looked at two different exploded views and one of them shows a spacer and one doesn't so that is why I was confused.
I will say I think it is an awesome crank. Thanks |
Are you possibly talking about the plastic spacers that Shimano uses to make the difference between 68mm and 73mm bottom-bracket shells?
FWIW, I just installed an SLX crankset, including the bottom-bracket that came with it. I don't recall how many of the spacers I used at the moment -- I used what the instructions said to use for my width of shell -- but I can tell you that there is no washer of any sort between either crank arm and external bearing cup. |
No I didn't replace the bottom bracket. There was a washer between the left crank arm and the bottom bracket on my LX, but my SLX didn't even have it in the package so I am guessing it wasn't needed. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't leaving something out.
Thanks everyone. |
