Shifter reccomendation?

I've got a pretty new Gary Fisher hybrid with Deore front & rear (8-speed) derailleurs. The shifters are Alivio, which I am hating. These require a lot of finger-effort to operate, the throw is long and they seem clunky and inelegant. Plus I have a bad thumb. In fact, after a ride, both hands are fatigued from shift effort. I love the rapidfire-style shifting. In looking around, the Deore XT M740 caught my eye because it's described as "fast, low effort - light action shifting" which is what I want. Is that a good bet for me? Are they even available? Any other recommendations?

Thanks

The M740s are a solid choice. I'd recommend new cables and housing while you're at it - it can make a big difference in how much effort it takes to shift.
