Actually, this time I genuinely interested in your explanation. I haven't really noticed this phenomenon myself so can't say either way. not so sure about your implied correlation between left crank arms coming loose and replacement arms stock though.

Well, if you don't expect to need it, there's no point in stocking it. Left crankarm failures are fairly common so bike shops like to keep some on hand.
