parts compatibility - freewheel rear hub/gear

Hi: looking to build a second set of wheels for my older road bike. Current rear wheel has a campy freewheel hub and a suntour 6 speed freewheel. (bike has suntour gear parts.) I don't know much about building bikes from separate parts by separately acquiring parts, but have taken apart & put together whole existing bikes & wheels.

Is there anything I need to know about compatibility of hubs and freewheels? Will pretty much any 6 speed suntour freewheel go with pretty much any freewheel hub (say shimano 105?)? Will any suntour freewheel go with my chain & front gears? Or is thredding/gear parts incompatible between certain manufacturers and even within manufacturers? How do I find out what my other parts are compatible with.

thanks

Darko

Why freewheel, and why 6 speed? Cassette hubs are inherently superior. If you have a friction shifter, you might as well go cassette hub.

An Ultra6 spaced Suntour frewheel has 5mm c-c cog spacing. Most 6s freewheels, including other Suntour, have 5.5mm c-c cog spacing. If you have a "standard" 6s freewheel, than most any 6s or 7s freewheel will fit your frame and drivetrain. If Ultra6, then you have to go 5s or Ultra6.

Assuming friction shifting, as long as the threading matches it should work. The vast majority of SunTour and Shimano hubs and freewheels are English thread but you may what to check yours to be sure. Newer (as in late 70s and newer) Campy hubs have the threading marked at the base of the threads just below the spoke flange.

Are you having problems with the Campy hub or SunTour freewheel that you feel a need to replace them?

No problems really, just would prefer two sets of wheels to have different sized tires on them.

Thanks to all for the help.
