shifter compatibility question

Does anyone know if Shimano SL-R440 shifters will work with 600 sti derailleurs and a Campy 8 speed cassette?

Pardon my ignorance but what are SL-R440? normally the shifter and cassette have to match, campi 8spd shifter and freewheel, you might get a shimano (not DuraAce) to index. but using *sp shimano shifter on a 8spd Campi may not work. the spacing in the shifter matches the spacing of the cogs.

SL-R440 is a Shimano flat bar hybrid/road bike rapidfire shifter. It is meant to be used with a FD-440, FD-443, or FD-453. Messages here claim that the front shifter has the MTB spec cable pull - meaning it would also work with any Shimano MTB front derailleur.
