Bent Chainring

Over the past couple of days I've been hearing a ratcheting noise while pedaling, particularly when using the small gears on the rear cassette. The noise comes with every revolution of the cranks, and matches my cadence. Today I noticed that my large chainring on the front is slightly bent, so I think that's probably the cause of the noise. Do I need to replace the chainring, or can I just whack that thing with a rubber mallet a few times?

The bike is a 2005 Specialized Rockhopper, with a Truvativ AL-7075-T6 triple chainring.

Mallet, but remove the chainring and use a flat surface to ensure you do the job right.
