shimano tiagra shifter problem

My friends bike has shimano 9 speed tiagra shifters. The right shifter (rear) is sticking real bad. It almost seems like it's locked up. Can these be fixed? I tried spraying them with wd-40, but it didn't help. any suggestions besides a new shifter? thanks

I had the same problem with mine. I just kept the brake caliper turned to loose and rode with it and then it started working after about 5,000 miles. Now with 3,000 more miles on it, no problem.
