Ultegra ST-6600 with ancient Exage or RX-100 FD: can't get to big ring!

Hello all,

I'm upgrading an older steel bike with Ultegra ST-6600 10spd and FC-600 compact crank 34-50. I decided to keep my exage front derailleur circa 1991, originally mated to a 40-53 double.

I can't seem to get the exage FD to push the chain from the 34 ring to the 50 ring. I tired an rx100 derailleur with same result. I'm starting to wonder if these older FDs just don't have the "range" to be able to cover the 16 tooth difference up front.

I'm new to 10spd. I mostly work with the older stuff, so I'm a bit confused about adjustments I might make to the left brifter. When I click to shift to the big ring, there's just not enough force generated to make the jump. I can accomplish the shift to the big ring if I pull the cable by hand.

I also want to be certain nashbar didn't send me a triple left shifter by accident. There are several discernible clicks when I'm shifting. Perhaps one of these clicks is related to trim?

Does the ST-6603 left shifter always come with the word "Triple" on it? That would make things easier b/c mine does not have the triple badge.

Any help is appreciated.

thanks

you should use a 10sp FD as the inner width of the cage varies greatly between 5/6/7/8/9 and 10sp.
