Is this repairable? Broken outer chainring tooth.

I have 2 items that I need to know if I can repair or if I just need to buy a new one. I would prefer to repair them if its possible.

The first is a broken tooth on the outer most chain ring. I am wondering if I can purchase (or find on ebay or possibly here) just a replacement ring for the specific chain ring. Or just a new set of 3 chain rings without buying a new crankset. See pic below.

The second is a busted link in the chain (might be related to the above). It doesn't look too bad but I want an opinion. Does it look fixable. See pic below.

I haven't worked on bikes before but I'm mechanically inclined. I am also not a person that has to have everything tip top condition. I know some people change their chains because of stretching. But I just want to know if its worth repairing.

My crankset is - Bontrager Race, 22/32/44 teeth

My chain is - 1/2 x 3/32" Shimano, guessing xtr

Yes you can get a new chain ring, and just get a new link in there. Or two links, whichever.

Any online retailers you'd recommend for parts like these, or just go to my local bike shop? Does the chain ring have to specifically be for Bontrager? Is there different grades of quality between chain rings?

My welder friend who does excellent work says it can be fixed easily. About $125.00. bk

The bike will work fine with that missing chainring tooth. There are so many teeth engaging the chain that one missing tooth won't cause any problems. If anything, it may actually shift from the middle-ring to the big one even easier with the missing tooth.

As for the chain-link, that most likely was caused by someone trying to re-use that pin after pushing it out. With the Shimano chains, a NEW pin must ALWAYS be used when the chain is disassembled by pushing a pin out. The ends of the pins are flared to grip the plates and pushing one out damages the flared ends and it never grips as well again. You can get a SRAM Powerlink to replace the one bad link. It's a nifty hand-installable/removable master-link:

Like Danno says, missing tooth isn't a big deal on the big ring. Repair the chain unless it's needing replacement, either get a Shimano replacement pin or a quick type link (SRAM is one brand, there are others like KMC). There is a possibility of reusing a pin on a Shimano chain if you want to peen it yourself. You'll need a chain tool to do the repair. If you do want to get chainrings likely you don't need all three at the same time, and if you do, often a new crankset can be a cost effective way to do it. In any case that's a 4-bolt 104/64 bcd (bolt circle diameter) crank and you'd get chainrings with that spec....

Thanks for the help. I found the SRAM powerlink locally for my 9 speed and got a chain tool. Was able to replace the link without much effort.

Yea the chainrings can be quite expensive new for the XT class. Been eyeing some used ones on ebay, hell some whole crank sets used are better deals. Either way the chain ring tooth isn't as crucial as the chain link was.

Before I forget, what are some popular bike parts retailers (online)? Most reputable with fair prices.
