Dura-ace 7402

I realize that variations of this topic have been covered before, however, all of my searches have ended with conflicting results/opinions.

Question: I have an 8-speed Dura-Ace rd #7402 and I'm wondering whether I can successfully run DA 9-speed downtube shifters (SH-SL7700) on an 8-speed cassette? I realize that the cog spacing is slightly different, but does the alternate cable routing Sheldon described actually work well?

Or does it really just come down to getting a set of 8-speed DA shifters?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Just try it? Or does the answer to your question lead to you purchasing a part that may or may not be compatible.

the b-route just allows proper cable actuation ratio between DA-7402 and the regular shimano cable pull ratio.

there's b for DA to regular, and then you can try b-routing for campy lever to shimano RD/cassette.

well, if indexing, best to try it, if it's friction, why bother?

According to Shimano it works. I think RobbieTunes may actually be using it. And I don't think it requires the alternate cable routing. If you look at the chart, ACR is for older DA shifter paired with a non-DA RD, not the other way around.

you'll also find the alternative routing is nearly impossible with the DA Rear der. i've tried it. I ran mine on an 8sp cassette with 9sp shifters and it shifts great. i'm currently using the old DA with 9sp shifters and cassette with a shiftmate. I've been very satisfied with the results.
