Threaded fork to threadless question.

I figured I would try and post here and see if you guys can give me some info.
I have an older mountain bike with a threaded 1 1/8 fork. The fork is damaged and I would like to swap it out with a threadless fork and new headset. My question is, do I have to replace the headset races or will the new (threadless) headset work with the old races.
Thanks

You'll get new races with your threadless headset. Use 'em.

Your old ones "might" work, but there are several factors involved, and you're not saving yourself any money anyway.

Hanging on to the lower race is usually doable, but for someone who's planning a fork swap anyhow there isn't much point in transferring the crown race as compared to setting the new one on the new fork.
