friction shifter help

hi all, i have a 76 grand prix, fixing it up then selling it to my friend, and i have a problem with my friction shifters. When i shift the gears, the shifters spring back to the smallest gear. did i install the shifters wrong?

Perhaps you don't have the tension set properly?

Friction shifters should stay in place once you've move them to a particular position. If they're not, you either:
need to tighten the adjustment (most come with some sort of wing nut)
or
you forgot a washer when installing them.

They're pretty simple devices, but if you leave off pieces they're not going to work.

Check the cable, too. See if it's binding anywhere. And that, while in the small - small gearing front and back, the cable is taut - not tight - but has resistance.
