Going inside an SRAM 9-speed X-5 thumbie

I was that close to finishing my latest build when I shredded the shift cable end trying to get it through a guide. So... I pulled out a new cable, and when I went to unscrew the cable end plug on the shifter, it appeared to be a soft rubber plug that was jammed down in the hole, and disintegrating as I tried to remove it (used part from ebay). So... I gingerly loosened the bolts on the casing to get a mm or two clearance to clean out the plug, then tightened them back up and installed the cable. Result: no shifting.

At this point I've got nothing to lose opening up the case and looking in. It isn't all that complicated, but how the mainspring mounts to the outer frame isn't obvious. And there seems to be some finesse required to get the tension right on the case when it goes back together. Before I drop $25 for a new unit, I wondered if anybody here had tried reassembling one of these. And for the neophytes, do NOT open the case on a thumb shifter, ever.

Update: Got it back together & working on the second try. Not too hard, the spring isn't that tight. The higher-priced models might be different, however.
