Campy R Derail 8-9-10 compatibility ?

I saw an Ebay listing for a Mirage 8-9-10 rear derailleur. I hadn't really thought about it, but is there any functional difference between the different Campy rear derailleurs ?? If you have 10 speed brifters & cassette, will a "9 speed" derailleur work ?

I want build a budget 10 speed Campy bike for my daughter, shopping for lightly used parts on Ebay, and wondering how picky I need to be.
Bikes: Old steel race bikes, old Cannondale race bikes, less old Cannondale race bike, crappy old mtn bike.

I believe that post '91 9 speed and 10 speed are compatible. 8 speed and early 9 speed work with each other, but not later versions.
If you download the exploded views from the Campy website, there is a table of compatibility in there, just after the Ergopower parts if I recall correctly.

Unlike Shimano whose rear derailleurs almost all work with any 8, 9 or 10-speed brifter (pre 9-speed Dura Ace being the sole exception), Campy's 8 and early 9-speed rd's aren't compatible with later 9/10-speed.

The cable pull change cut-off date is 2001 (which may have been the intro date for Chorus/Record 10 speed?) Mirage wasn't offered in 10s any earlier than that, so my guess is that a newer Mirage would work. If the description said 9/10 I wouldn't worry, but I'm not sure if Mirage was still 8s in '01. Probably was, though, so you'd be OK. A Chorus/Record 9 would definitely not work.
