chain compatibility
I currently have the KMC X8 chain on my bike and was wondering how I can go about figuring out whether the KMC X9 SL chain would work or not in my current configuration.

if you have an 8sp setup, then yes.

count the number of cogs in the rear wheel.
7 or 8 cogs = use 8sp chain (can use 9sp and 10sp chains)
9 cogs = use 9sp chain (can use 10sp chains)
10 cogs = use 10sp chain
7 or 8 cogs = use 8sp chain (can use 9sp and 10sp chains)
9 cogs = use 9sp chain (can use 10sp chains)
10 cogs = use 10sp chain
