What are these pedals?
I'm just curious what pedal system these are. I am not very familiar with the different types, and I didn't see a model number or much identification on them. I just want to know what sort of cleats and shoes I should be looking for.

I wouldn't go ahead and pick up some shimano SPD cleats though. When I bought some new shoes to go with used pedals that included cleats, I was told that the ones that were with them won't work with the pedals. They look like SPD cleats only have some funny ridges on them. Now I have useless cleats
Also, I am completely aware that made no sense whatsoever.

There was a company called VIP from Taiwan and they offered a pedal of this type. The marking in the center of the removable plate may shed some light.
Shimano generally puts its name & model number somewhere on its products.
The system looks very much like SPD, but the cleats have a different profile. Neither system interfaces with the other although there is a noise/feel which may give the sensation of clipping in.
The shoe will pull right out.
There should be replacement cleats available but you have to get the specific VIP cleat.

I have a pair of SPD compatible pedals from Nashbar or Performance - looked exactly like this.
Wouldn't spend $ on cleats though if you can find a friend with SPDs to test out....

The OP's pedals are early Ritchey Logic pedals, SPD-compatible and made by Wellgo, I think. Otherwise made by VP.

I second the Ritchey opinion, as they appear to have the Ritchey logo in the center of the pedal between the two screws.
