HELP - Dura Ace to Campy Record Crank?
I have a mid-1980's 8-speed De Rosa (Antonio de Pozzuoli, not Ugo De Rosa - see link to pics) that I acquired with a mix of Campy Record and Dura Ace. I have started to switch the entire grupo back to Campy. I'm planning to have my LBS switch out my current crankset (Dura Ace 7402 170mm 39/53 double ring) for Record. Can't tell for sure what type of BB I have but it looks like a Primato 36x24 F Mishe. My frame BB measures 70mm. My questions are: Do I need to change my curent BB since the Record axle has a square taper bolt (I think so)? I think I would need an Italian thread BB? Also, what size Record crank would I need? There are a bunch of sizes ranging from 102mm up to about 113mm so I'm not sure if that matters for the bike geometry or if it's just a preference thing.
Any help on how I can best tackle this job woulf be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!
Stephen

In the world of square taper bottom brackets, Campy and Shimano are two distinct standards (i.e. ISO for Campy and JIS for Shimano), and you should never mix them. So, moving to Campy would require changing both the bottom bracket and crankset. The correct bottom bracket spindle length depends on the type/model of crankset that you choose. Recent Chorus/Record requires 102mm, while Centaur/Veloce requires 111mm.
Also, your bike undoubtedly requires Italian threaded bottom bracket cups. In addition to the slight thread difference, these are right-hand threaded on both sides (compared to English cups, which are left-hand threaded on the non-drive side).

BB thread = crank doesn't care. What does matter is whether or not the taper is JIS or ISO, which is precisely the difference between Shimano and Campy. Sheldon says he's mixed them without problems. I say don't do it. The chainline will NOT be what is spec'ed for a specific length bb if it's say JIS but now you've slapped in an ISO bb.
