Can I install A 07 Deore front derailleur on a 1996 steel frame.

I want to install a Deore front derailleur on my 1996 Gary Fisher HKEK.And I know most of you all know this but, being its a old steel frame, the tube is smaller than today's aluminum frames . I am guessing someone makes shims for this very purpose? If thats the case where can I get them, if not the case any other suggestions?

Some Shimano FD's come with three different diameter bands to choose from - including the 28.6mm. Ask your LBS if they have one that'll fit you.

A retail packaged Deore FD will probably come with the necessary shims. Check if the package says "universal seat tube size".

Thanks, but the problem is, its installed on another bike that it came stock on. "hence no packaging" That bike is going to get a XT as a replacement. So I am wanting to install the Deore on my beater bike. I just need to find some time to go to the shop I deal with and ask them. They have a really good mech, who wont give me any BS.

You could just wrap it with inner tube.

Ask any LBS if they can spare a 28.6 shim, they should have some leftovers.

This particular XT FD appears to accomodate three seat tube sizes.

Does this bike and the donor bike have different seat tube diameters?
Is it possible that you'll get the shim you need with the XT FD?
