Shimano Deerhead Rear Derailleur Tension Adjustment

I have a 1985 Ritchey Ascent with Shimano Deerhead Front and Rear Derailleurs and Deerhead Shifters.

I've got the Front and Rear derailleurs dialled in for shifting between gears, but I can't seem to get the chain tension right. It will be ok as long as I'm providing tension on the chain but if I coast or am in too small a gear to keep tension on, such as going down a hill, the chain drops off and I'm afraid of it getting caught up in the rear wheel. I've tried adjusting the indexing, without results.

I've read Sheldon Brown's website about adjusting the B-tension but can't find any adjusting screws beside the upper and lower limits.

Please help, Summer is only here for a short time every year and I'm trying to commute to work as much as I can.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Stop playing with the adjustments, they won't fix this.
Your descriotion is vague but it sounds as though either your freehub is not dis-engaging properly or your rear derailleur is not taking up tension.
With the bike standing pull on the lower run of the chain. Does it spring back? If not, try cleaning the derailleur and lubing the pivots. If that doesn't help, replace.
If the chain springs back when you pull on the lower run, then it's probably a freehub problem. Try flushing it out with degreasers and drizzling in some light oil. If that doesn't help, replace.
