Chainguard options on a road bike

So today I saw an older bike and it had a huge chainguard which was easily larger than my 52t crank...anyone ever tried to install a vintage bike chainguard on a modern road bike?

also, if that fails, I'm considering a little DIY crankguard to protect my right leg...consisting of a plastic plate drilled and cut with a pair of scissors, and bolted onto the crank with bolts from the local hardware shop. Thoughts?
