Broken Spoke, Cracked Rim, Question.

My friend recently got an old road bike, piece of junk, weighs 80 pounds, etc.

I did a tune up for him, found it has a broken spoke and cracked rim.

Heres the question

Can a broken spoke and/or cracked rim cause a bump in the wheel? The radial true is'nt to bad, i believe its not bad anough to cause a bump.

When its out of radial true, wouldn't there be more of an up-and-down motion? rather a bump?
Thanks guys.

Perhaps whatever caused the crack and broken spoke also caused the bump. How bad is the lateral true? A laterally untrued wheel can give an erratic ride also.

at this point I think the question of what is causing the bump is academic. if the rim is cracked it should be replaced

+1
The wheel needs to be rebuilt with a new rim and probably all new spokes.

hi

I know it shoul be replaced, but just wanted to know if the crack and/or missing spoke were anough tio cause the bump. thanks.

Edit: THis is the wrost 27'' wheel Ive ever handled. Piece of crap, the complete bike weighs 100 pounds. I don't even know the brand, but its not lugged/don't see welds. The down tube/top tube go in to the head tube by holes. Not the sorta hub for a rebuild.

It's hard to know without seeing it. Is the tire lumpy? That could do it. If the wheel has hit something hard the tire casing could be damaged and cause a lump.

Broken spokes don't necessarily cause "bumps" in rims.

Spokes are what keep the rim round and true, and transmit forces from hub to rim, and rim to hub.

It's often kind of "chicken and egg" as to whether an impact caused a bent rim and broken spokes, or whether a spoke broke and caused mis-alignment. In your case though, the evidence of a cracked rim leads me to suspect the crack, broken spoke and bump in the rim all occurred together as the result of an impact.

I was wrong about the crack, it was actually just the conjunction where the rim fits together, I wasn't use to seeing it all rough like that, Because alot of my rims are nice quality, by far the worst-road bike ive ever worked On. Still though, that conjunction coulda been a bit serpated.

I put a new tire on it, and I think the bump went away, the road was really rough so I felt the vibration before the bump. Either way, I did a fine tune up to his bike, that needed it.

Glad internet provides me with the resources of this forum.
