Bottom Bracket "Smoothness?"
 

I just picked up a used record bb on fleabay today (had 1k miles on it) and was wondering how to gauge the smoothness of the spindles before installing it. Only reason I ask is, i spin them with my fingers and I feel some metal drag/friction on them, but they spin freely nonetheless. It was advertised by the seller as being as smooth as the day it was installed, which i've heard frequently from record riders; I'm just wondering if this drag is normal.

Only way to tell is to look at the races for signs of wear. If the owner rode it while out of adjustment or such - any bottom-bracket can be damaged. Or just install it and pack it with new grease and fresh 1/4" ball-bearings - Grade 25. Then put your cranks on it and see how it feels.

I have a Campy Record BB from 1982. And it really is as smooth as day one.

I wish I could overhaul it though... would take ten minutes and I could be at ease.

edit: upon inspection, don't know exactly what to look for. Is this a break in the 'race'? or is this normal?

That looks like a c-clip. I had no idea this was a cartridge-design Record. I'm not sure if that is normal or not. It looks suspect to me as Campy components tend to be perfect. Someone who is more familiar with the design will, no doubt, be able to clear this mystery up. Weird...

Overhauling a cartridge BB is not generally done. Certainly not with only 1,000 kilometers on them. Generally when they wear out, you toss 'em and get a new one.

Yep, I know i can't overhaul a cartridge bb. Well I guess I'll throw it on later today and see what happens...

Drag is a common feeling with cartridge BB's. My Shimano un-72 has a lot more drag feeling now than when it was new, but under load . . .which is what matters . . . it's smooth as butter. Cartridges don't spin like the old cup and cone did due to the seals I suppose.

Your BB is very likely fine.
