Compatible Clear Coat for touch up...Trek 2300
Hi guys,
Thanks for previous help...I am nearly there with your help.
I have a late 90's (original owner but can't recall year...I am too old) Trek 2300.
Had a piece of tape holding a pump for one ride...off comes clear coat...see photo.
All else is now running great (thx for help getting there) and bike looks good...I would like to touch this up. What clear coat to use?
Thx,
John

I would assume it's a catalyzed (2k) urethane clear.
Option1. Go to a body shop & ask them about it. However, they (andyou based on cost) would probably reccomend stripping, sealing & repainting base/clear coat.
Option2. You can go to an autobody supply shop an get a small can (spray) of what's referred to as "door jam" clear (about 20 bucks a can). Dupont makes it, but I'm sure others do too. I'd rough up the tube / frame with 400 or 600 grip sand paper first though.
Option3. If you want to go cheap, go to a parts store and get a can/ touch up bottle of Duplicolor clear coat. However, this is a lacquer-based paint& won't last near as long.

Thanks guys. Very helpful to know what to get.
Sounds like, given that it chipped, this may be the beginning of more and more, so best over the long haul, would be to redo all. Maybe a good "off season" project! I have spent around $350 with new pedals/aerobar/seat post/saddle...getting tuned back up for a tri. Am enjoying the heck out of riding again. Think will keep her around awhile...
