Getting sand out of brifters?
 

Hey guys,

Need some help here: went biking on the bike lanes at the beach yesterday, and one of these guys with a surfboard attached to his bike was in front of me. He went from the right of the lane to the middle, so I thought that I could pass him on his right. Needless to say, he starts weaving around right at me just when I was about to start passing. With no room to brake or anything else, I took the dive to the right and went into the sand hard.

Cleaned everything else on my bike, but having some difficulty getting the sand outta my sora brifters. Sprayed them out with water and wd40, and cleaned quite a bit out. Still some sand in there, so wondering if you guys have any help to offer =P

Sounds like you're doing the right thing. Compressed air would be good, better than water.

Yeah, you're doing the right thing. I got a used bike (for cheap) with sand-infested brifters. Spent quite a while cleaning them out with WD40 - had to use a whole can of it... Flush with WD40, then flush with running water; repeat a couple of times, then lubricate with some sort of oil; I used tri-flow.

Now, all this flushing is going to get rid of most of the factory grease that's lubricating your brifters - and replenishing this grease is practically impossible. So, now you're gonna have to keep them lubricated with oil - you'll need to add a couple of drops of oil every couple of weeks for the rest of your life.
