Bought a 97 Trek 800 on craigs
Hi. I just picked up a trek 800 mtb from cl and would like to upgrade whatever I can. I want this to be a daily rider for fun and to learn bike mechanics in the process. It will be a long winter process but I wanted to ask just what parts/componants I can upgrade to ? It has shimano altus derailleurs, steel cro mo frame an d shimano thumb shifters. I know I can purchase another bike but as I stated this is a project for me. Any help anyone could give me on upgrades I would be thankful

I would just clean it up and ride it. Bike is probably ready for new cables and housings. Get good ones. Make sure bottom bracket is adjusted. Ditto hub cones. Read up on the Sheldon Brown site and the Park Tool site and you will quickly become an expert.
The Trek 800 is a good solid bike, but not worth spending a lot on upgrades. When you get the urge to upgrade, it is cheaper to just buy a higher model as mountain bikes depreciate really fast. I moved up from a Trek 800 to a Trek 950 last year. I bought the 950 for less than what I sold the 800 for.
