Shimano Deore XT (8) install on mid 80's roadie with 6 speed cassette?
I'm putting together a project bike from frame and bits. Wheels have a 6 speed cassette (altho I may hunt around the volunteer shop for a 7 speed to fit it... I think I they will fit and work in the 126MM allowance).
I have a Shimano Deore XT (I think it says SIS 8 on it) sitting about. Looks like a nice changer and would like to pop it on (in place of the scrounged Sun Tour rear der I first mounted). Will that newer Der work on that old cassette (or better on the '7')? Also, I will be using bar ends that have friction and indexed options. Can I set it up to do index shifting or is that '6' too old skool?
I rekon I could just tear it all down, re-cable, break the chain, re-link, etc and see what happens... but thought I'd ask.
thanks for any help
Mark

Hello first of all you are talking about a 6spd cassette and not a freewheel yes? the derailuer should work (although the cage might be narrow for the chain). you can generally use newer derailuers on older systems but not the other way.
as for wether it will index is mor complicated. in general you must have compatible shifters and freewheels/cassettes. if you have shimano index shifters you need shimano FW/Cass. or if your shifters are suntour you need suntour FW. sometimes with a bit of trial and error you can mix n match but that is mostly experimenting.

DOH!
sorry... I was multi-tasking while at work... it is a FREEWHEEL not a cassette.
The indexing part is pure frosting on the cake. I'm cool with friction. I have both suntour bar ends and Shimano bar ends. the Shimanos are newer (scavenged off a C'dale tour bike whose aluminum frame was cracked in two). I think I'll just stick with friction and experiment. I can always fall back to the Suntour RD.
thanks for the comments!

should work fine, esp. if you run a 7/8-speed chain.
the NOS shimano 7-speed bar-ends i got a few years ago came with a little sliver insert that lets them index for 6-speed. i have no idea how well it works but i could mail it to you if you want to try it. the shifters i have are SL-BS50 (but not SL-BS50-8). don't know if the sliver works with others.
