Squeak!!!!!!!!!!!!
 

I got about 2 miles outside Faversham this morning when I started to hear a piercing squeak form the bike. I thought it was coming from the front wheel but wasn't entirely sure.I got off the bike, checked the wheel was running free of the brakes, loosened and retightened the QR , everything looked fine. I got back on, squeaking started again. Got off, checked the rear wheel, it looked fine. Tried coasting, and still got the squeak so I ruled out the chainset/BB. Tried pushing the bike, no squeak.

I squeaked back into Faversham alarming all vehicles I passed and caught the train. I jumped on the bike at canterbury and the squeak had completely gone.

Now it was wet this morning so I'm guessing that may have been a factor. Any ideas? Other than the wheels I wondered about the elastomers in the fork?

In the words of the great Toyah Willcox, "It's a mystery". Nothing caught in the guard? Was the squeak cyclical (forgive the pun) or random?

It seemed pretty much constant with movement but varying in intensity seemingly at random rather than truly cyclical.

As I said it only happened under weight which made me wonder about the forks. What would water in the hubs sound like? I'm assuming it was wet weather related, as it stopped after twenty minutes in a dry guards van...

I'm not sure water in the hub would have caused a squeek. Might be the suspension

How water got up in the forks is the only question though - it might have ben wet this morning but I don't recall riding through anything deep...

At least it seems to have stopped. I was just mystified and didn't want to ride and cause permanant damage.

It was fine for the mile to the station but half a mile from home it started again, this time in the dry.

It's intermittant but somehow sounds like it's related to the turning wheels if that makes sense...

As it happens a while into a ride could it be something heating up with friction?

It sounds more of a rubber squeak than a metal screech but I'm not 100% sure.

can you tell if squeeeeeek is coming from rear or front of
bike? Could you have bearings that are causing problem?
Interesting that it occurs under load and not when you are
pushing the bike. I'd look at wheels, hubs etc.

Maybe your BB, but i think that would be a more ticking sound, but you can check it anyway.
Check your accecoires, bags, cyclocomputer, ect. maybe they run against something?

Judging by your description it doesn't sound like the hub. Would you describe it as an intermittent squeak or a more prolonged screech? Does it correlate it to any specific situation like bumps, turning etc? Can you reproduce it by compressing the fork manually (off the saddle) and perhaps rolling the bike fore and aft? Are the brakes aligned properly and can you verify they are not contacting the tire?

Correct me if I'm wrong but this suspension fork has seen a lot of rain and has never been lubed/overhauled? Water will work it's way in anything given time. This sound is likely a result of a cumulative effect. If the fork is more than a few months old and you commute on it twice a day it is quite possible it needs attention. What kind of fork is it? Roughly how many miles?

Do you have those rubber seals on the shimano deore hubs, 2 in front , 1 on the LH rear ??.... sit on the stationary bike, grab the front brake and and compress the fork any noise ? ...

Also check your seat post. Sometimes a squeak will sound like it's coming from another part of the bike, it's really hard to tell.

I had a squeak I couldn't trace, and eventually found when I lubed the seatpost, it went away.

Aerobat your right, i know some seatposts can be ticking or squeaking.
My old Syncros seatposts had this annoying sound, and its a well known thing about Syncros!

Its been a busy weekend so no real riding time. This afternoon I had a short run and of course the squeak didn't want to show itself...

I've greased the seatpost, removed both wheels and checked they were running freely, checked brakes, pumped the fork up and down a bit, cleaned the chain and cassette and crossed my fingers....

I've had seat-post squeaks that sounded like they were coming from anywhere but the seat post. Actually, sometimes it's not really the seat post, but the rails or the way the saddle is attached to the rails. Anyway, squeaks from the saddle area can be maddening and hard to pin down.

I spoke to the lbs today and I'm going to drop the bike off tomorrow, but he thinks its the rear hub rubber seal expanding slightly as it gets warm.

Well the lbs packed the inside of the rubber seals with grease and 20 miles later I've yet to have a squeak :)
