Parts for Specialized Rockhopper FS 1993?
 

Hi All,

I've got an old 1993(?) Specialized Rockhopper FS, at least I think that's what year it is (It is metallic purple/black with red decals...), and I need to replace the gear shifter and shocks. I am inexperienced with bike components, and am just looking to get the thing into riding condition again. Can anyone recommend some decent, cheap components for me and give me a link to buy them at? I believe the old shifter and shocks were as follows:

Shifter: Shimano Exage M System DualSIS (ST-M320)
Shocks: Specialized Future Shock (Air-Oil)

While the latter offers canti or V-brake option, there is no difference between the two. The levers are convertible from canti to v-brake pull by removing a screw, rotating a bracket, and replacing the screw. Just FYI.

For a shock, I would considering going with a rigid fork like this:

RST makes some cheap suspension forks also but the place I would normally recommend to get them through no longer sells them apparently. Search around and you might find them though. Buying a used fork is another option to save some money. I'm sure there are tons on Ebay. Just make sure the steerer tube is the correct diameter and long enough for your headtube. Measure your current fork steerer tube length and get something as long or longer. you can always cut it down to fit (assuming a threadless steerer).

If it's a 1993 you'll get a lot better advice if you post a photo.

Headset could be threaded or not. Fork steerer could be 1" or 1 1/8". Brakes are probably going to be canty's which will be impacted by your fork replacement. If you upgrade to V-brakes you'll need new brake levers.

This is sounding to me like a project that you'll want to cost out real carefully before spending ANY money. Once you start down that road it can get real hard to stop spending good money after bad.

I've been using simple Shimano Tourney shifters on mtb rebuilds, including a seven speed Specialized Hardrock I did recently.

I find them at Niagara for $12. Strange, I do not see them there right now.

Do you think I could get away with shifter pods only, or would I need to replace the shifters and brakes together?

As far as the fork/shocks, the right one (when riding the bike) is still in good condition, but the left one blew out the seal in the top which I would inject air into. I know this is hacky, but I was thinking about trying to tap it and insert a threaded schrader valve. Thoughts? I'd really like to keep the front shocks rather than going to a fixed fork, but want to avoid the project spiraling out of control cost-wise like Retro Grouch said.

Those combo brake/shifters require that the whole unit be replaced if one part fails.

I can't comment on your shock mod as I don't really understand what you are attempting to accomplish. Again, you should be able to find a decent used fork on Ebay that will get your bike going again. You have a threaded headset which makes your current fork a bit of an oddity as most suspension forks do not have threaded steerers.

You'd buy the steerer tube seperately (measure for diameter and length using your current fork) and press it into the crown. Ebikestop has the steerer tubes online too.
