Annoying rear derailleur question

I know there are many posts on indexing, but I have a vexing problem.

First, the basics: The cable and housing are new, the chain and cogs are not worn, the H, L, and B settings are correct. It is a non-rapid rise derailleur, and it has been indexed to the second smallest cog by backing off a quarter turn from where it begins to make noise.

The setup is SRAM Rocket grip shifters with an Ultegra rear, as set up by the MFR. The housing is Flack Jacket.

It is a 9 speed set up. When in the 8th gear, it always jumps to the 9th and then falls back to 8th repeatedly making for poor hill climbing and a terrible sound. Any thoughts?

Sometimes wrapping the rear derailleur cable the opposite way around the cable fixing bolt will fix this. I know that I once installed my cable wrapped around in the wrong direction, and I couldn't figure it out for a long time. I wrapped it the other way and it was instantly fixed.

"Auto-shifting" is usually caused by a slightly incorrect shift cable adjustment or by a bent derailleur hanger. Sheldonbrown.com has a section on auto-shifting.

Whenever I encounter a rear shifting problem that doesn't respond to normal tuneing, the first thing that I do is to check the derailleur hanger alignment. The more cogs you have on the rear, the more picky the derailleur is about perfect alignment.

Loosen the cable-tension by backing off another 1/2-turn and it should take care of that problem.

So it won't stay on the largest cog (lowest gear)? Back off the low gear limit screw a smidge- it sounds like it wants to shift but the limit screw doesn't allow enough overshift for the chain to stabilize on the big cog.

Thanks so much everyone. It started to shift poorly in other gears, so it must be a housing problem. This is a very long bike (a recumbent), so I think it has to do with the length of cable. I'll try a rollamajig and will lube the cable.
