Ultegra 6600 RD for 9-speed?

I had this RD set up on my road bike in a 9-speed configuration. I've moved the whole shebang to my cross bike but am having a weird shifting anomaly that I can't seem to adjust out. Basically, the 13 cog on my 12-25 is skipped in both directions when shifting. I'm wondering if the RD might be configured for 10-speed (since it supposedly can work for both) but I can't find any documentation on Shimano's site that explains the difference. Can someone explain the difference on using it for 9 or 10-speed? Could having it setup for 10-speed be causing this particular shifting issue I am having?

Thanks,

Mike

The RD doesn't care how many gears you have. The indexing is in the shifter. If you have a 9 speed shifter and set up the RD properly there should be no problems.

Its' not the derailleur.

davidad 09-24-09 06:27 PM

Make sure that the der. hanger is not bent.

RacerMike 09-24-09 06:39 PM

der hanger is straight. could the shifter be bad causing this problem?

Thanks for the replies.

The derailer does make a difference in some cases, the parallelograms have different dimensions and go different distances per x distance of shifter pull. You can't use 7900 derailleurs with 7900 shifters, or Sram derailer with Shimano, etc.

Do you get 2 clicks in when going from 12 to 14? Or is it a single click and then the rest go normally?

Shift all the way and then click up once. Adjust until the derailleur and chain line up to the 13 using the barrel adjuster. Check that the chain runs quietly. Click up one to the 14. Does it align properly? Go the other way. Does it go down to the 12 properly? If it won't go to the 12, adjust the limit screw so it falls in. If none of this works, something is probably bent. Are you sure you are using shift cable housing with the parallel strands and not spiral brake cable housing?

Really?

Check to make sure the cable routing is correct at the RD.

With the chain on the smallest cog flip the small shift lever several times to make sure all of the cable is out of the shifter. There should be no slack in the cable.

Wow, do I actually get to be the first to suggest replacing the cable and housing? Of course, if you didn't follow the correct procedure for installing the rear derailler, you should do that first. Dial in your limit screws, then attach the cable, and fine tune from there.

This is easy to miss. The cable should run to the inside of the clamping bolt. There is a groove in the derailleur body above the bolt head and the cable should run in this groove.

This. Following your advice 12,13 and 14 are good, but 15 gets skipped.

Done, everything appears to be correct. If I remove the cable from the derailleur I get 8 clicks in both directions. When I hook the cable up, I only get 7. The derailleur and cogs are all lined up for every click, so that's last click is making a huge jump causing the 13 to be skipped.

Cable and housing is all brand new.

So to summarize: With cable disconnected I get 8 clicks from the shifter. With cable connected I only get 7. I'm at a loss as to what could cause this.

Thanks again for all the replies.

Either your limit screws are way off, you have way too much tension, or you are connecting the cable without having the shifter in the highest gear.

Limit screws were set with the chain removed so I think they are spot on. I'll try removing some tension tomorrow and see what happens. Definitely and doing all the cable tensioning in the smallest cog.

Thanks,

Mike

Check the full length of the shift cable to make sure there are no kinks or excess friction.

Just some ideas

Often, when you get fewer clicks than the capacity of the shifter, it's because the limit screws are preventing the derailleur from reaching the final position. Check these.
Check your cassette. Make sure you see equal spacing between cogs.
Check your cable tension when the derailleur is positioned at the smallest, most outboard cog. There should be only enough tension to take up all the slack.
Make sure the anchor bolt's fixing plate is positioned so the bent tab faces the rear of the derailleur, with the cable running beneath it.

Off the wall thought... Smallest two cassette cogs are singles, you don't have the 13 in backwards, do you?

bluenote157 09-25-09 06:54 AM

It does sound like an adjustment issue however...I'll throw this out there..and maybe i'm completely off, but is your chain worn out or does it have any kinks in it?
