Installing a 68 width into a 73mm shell.... bad?

I have a Surly 1x1 that I just found a crack in my RaceFace cranks. Neat.

I use it as a rainy commuter bike and so figured I would get a Campy alloy crank for it so I could use my pretty full complement of campy rings I already have.

But I have come to realize that nobody makes a british 73mm width ISO taper BB other than Phil and I don't really want to invest $200 on a BB and tools.

So, I assume a 68mm BB would fit but the non-drive side cup would sit recessed into the BB shell by 5mm. Is that the only problem I face?

I know I can install the BB onto a JIS taper, but prefer not to.

Notes:
I don't want to face the BB to 68mm if possible so as not to a) screw with resale b) intruduce a rust spot since it IS my rain bike.

I already bought the crank so....

if the NDS cup has a lip, it'll prevent proper support on the NDS

NDS crank will also sit in further, so you'll have to make sure your NDS crank doesn't hit your chainstay.

It's left.

You might call these folks and see if they have the correct taper. http://www.biketoolsetc.com/index.cg...r-Spindle&q=&s=

As the OP noted, 73 mm bottom bracket shells are almost exclusively used on MTB and similar frames and the matching bottom brackets are almost exclusively made for JIS tapers. Apparently Phil Wood does make a 73 mm ISO spindle but that's big bucks.
