chain falling off older bike?
I have an old Gitane 10spd from the 80s. I ride it around the city and to work occasionally. The commute is only 4 miles rt. Anyway last fall I was going to pick up some sammiches and accelerating to make a light, when the chain slipped off sending me over the handlebars and into the ER overnight. So I took it in to the shop and they adjusted my derailleur so it wouldn't happen again. (I also got new pedals b/c one of them had snapped in a separate incident). So everything was fine for this summer until yesterday when the chain slipped again. Going up a hill it came off the 2nd smallest cog and similar to last time, skipped over the smallest and wedged between it and the frame. Luckily i didnt fall but now I'm nervous about the bike. Seems like a lot of people on here commute on older rides, is this just one of the hazards you have to deal with or can it be fixed? Maybe I should get a new bike for the first time since 1983?
Any advice much appreciated.

The age of the bike really has nothing to do with the problem, UNLESS it's never had any maintenance in it's lifetime and had worn parts (ie: chain/cogs) replaced as needed. You don't provide much information on the mechanical history of the bike. An older bike with proper maintenance will function just as well as a newer one. (Sometimes better)
A bike shop should have spotted a worn chain/cogs, but these days who knows?
