Let's talk about the Mavic 610/616 bottom bracket

So I have this bike. This nice bike. This nice bike that I want to make into a winter work bike. THE PROBLEM:

It has one of the Mavic threadless bottom brackets in it. The previous owner cross-threaded the daylights out of the bb shell and had to get one of these installed to save the bike. Apparently these are great bottom brackets, but the one in there right now is in rough shape. There's one on ebay, but he'll only ship to the States. I'm feeling a little up a creek right now. I phoned around; a LBS has one but they want over a hundred dollars for it and that's blowing the budget for the bike. So:

The point of this admittedly longwinded post is to ask whether I can plug new bearings into the one that came with the bike, or do I have to just buy a new one? Is there any fix for this problem?

Hello nice BB! I never owned one a coworker had a few. it is a great way to fix a mucked up shell. I think you might be able to replace the bearings. they are cartridge type and any bearing/industrial supply may have them. I have some old Mavic service info but it is at home and I am away for work for a few weks but someone else will know for sure. if all else fails I would be willing to forward your ebay bb to you.

Hello,

Yep, it is very easy to open the BB. If you don't have the right tool, use a bent needle nose plier with the caps. Lightly tap the spindle to get the opposite cartridge out and do the same on the other. Find identical bearings, put them and the spindle back and use the screwable caps to tighten the whole shebang. You don't need to press the bearings.

BTW, I bought a NOS one from somebody and I opened to see the condition of the bearings, expecting dry/gummed up grease, but everything was perfect. The caps have a seal ring.

Mel Pinto has NOS Edco eccentric cup threadless bottom brackets available, if rehabilitating the Mavic doesn't work out. Unlike the Mavic, the Edco units don't require any special prep to the BB shell.

I don't know why everyone keeps saying this but you don't need to chamfer the BB. The bigger problem is their shytacular quality.

Proper installation requires a 45 degree chamfering of the bb shell. My sample size is one unit admittedly, but I installed one in place of a worn out French bb. Not having the tool to chamfer the shell, I installed it and hoped for the best. The bike made it maybe a mile before the non drive side flange sheared off. This experience has led me to take the directive seriously.

i took a 616 apart and it had 16 x 30 x 9 bearings

then i did a search and found this

i took mine apart and the boca bearings 16x30x7 mm with

bearings (replacement): boca bearings 16x30x7 were the only replacements i could find - would work (seems like it would work) with 20x30x2 mm aluminum washer as a spacer OD=30 ID>20 (one on each side on the outside)

haven't looked for that size washer

i had one on my bike (mtn bike) for about 5 years then i took it off and one of the bearings was rough and needed replacement, the other one was still smooth rolling .

Will you only need to replace the ball bearings? Or the whole cartridge ? I am really not familiar with the cartridge system,does this system also need regular maintenance like we do to traditional ball bearing system?

no . (just clean and replace bearings once in a long time) (bearings look like this below)

but you have to use a washer or something as mentioned above because it's supposed to be 9mm wide

bearings (replacement): boca bearings 16x30x7 (width is 2mm too short) were the only replacements i could find - would work with 20x30x2 aluminum washer as a spacer OD=30 ID>20 (or might be able to drill out small washer to fit on other side of bearings (inner) but check parts to confirm)

A Mavic bottom bracket is a treasured BB and should be valued like a Phil Wood. Truly a lifetime bb. Sealed bearings bring these back to "new" whenever you want to service the sealed bearings. However, they can go for years without needing bearing replacement.

These spin like butter. Most people don't realize the chamfering is only 2.0-2.5mm on the BB shell to fit this compression bb. You can go back to a traditional bb commonly, as there is still plenty of bb thread to install most BBs.

Anyone wanting to chamfer a shell I have the Mavic chamfering tool.

I got two of the Mavic 610 BB but one has some serious play. The correct reference for the SKF bearings seems to be BB1-3507. I'm trying to find the right bearings but only found sealed ones from this site: 123roulement.be/roulement-BB1-3507-SKF.php but no way I'm spending that kind of money for two bearings.

Any thoughts on using the boca bearings suggested above with a washer, since they are not sealed? Bad idea?

wow thanks for the link on the bearings i haven't actually replaced the bearings yet like above (i haven't actually tried that) it's just what i thought i would try doing but if it's just loose you might be able to just clean and tighten everything down - the reason why i thought i could do that is because the whole bottom bracket mechanism is sealed the bearings seem pretty sealed inside the unit - i can't recall exactly - but i have also mavic hubs which i worked on more recently and definitely with the hubs you just tighten it up to get rid of play (it pushes on opposite sides of the bearing - the bottom side on one side and the top side on the other to get rid of play - and now that i think about how i described the washer above that would be the same for the bb - and also for the hubs (which is similar design i used open bearings on my front hub about a year ago and haven't had any issues since)

(also the rear hub would probably need a sealed bearing on the drive side since that side is open - or that side is open so i wouldn't do that on the rear hub / just because i mentioned about hubs
