can rust spread from one bicycle to another?
I have a very old bike with a lot of rust on it.
I want to take off a few parts from it like the wire basket, the kickstand etc. and attach it to one of my newer bikes. will that rust spread to my newer bikes? |
Not if they use protection.

what protection ? a condom ? just kidding.
really, what protection is that ? and if there is no protection it will surly spread ? |
Corrosion is not "contaigous". However, some things will accelerate the corrosion of other things.
If you clean the rusty parts and then paint them or plate them or something similar to keep them from rusting again, then they will have no impact on the parts they are attached to. |
+1 Rust is not contagious, though sometimes rust particles will loosen and wash down staining other parts and looking like it's spreading.
Before reusing rusty parts, sand or steel wool the rust off and use a "rustoleum" type paint to protect the bare metal. BTW, while rust isn't contagious, the same environment will cause other things to rust, so if you store your bikes outdoors or in a damp basement, be sure to protect them against corrosion. |

There must be fluid exchange.

Iron oxide is harder than steel and will accelerate erosion in moving parts, but otherwise it's fine.

ahahahah this thread gave me a good laugh (im a chem major)

1. cover your mouth when you cough
2. cough into your arm 3. frequent hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol-based gel Rust? I thought this thread was about H1N1. |
if you keep the two bikes in separate rooms, the rust won't spread.
