Removing an IGH wheel
The Owner's Manual that came with my Townie 7 (with Nexus 7 hub and coaster brake) contains the following instruction:
"Warning: If your bike is equipped with an internal gear hub, do not attempt to remove the rear wheel. The removal and re-installation of internal gear hubs require special knowledge. Incorrect removal or assembly can result in hub failure, which can casuse you to lose control and fall"
I have not yet had any need to remove the rear wheel, but no doubt sooner or later I will have to change a tube. On examining the bike, I cannot see that there should be any difficulty at all in removal. In refitting I can see that getting the alignment right might take some care but this would apply to any wheel.
What exactly is "special knowledge" that the Owner's Manual is referring to?

With my wife's breezer, I disconnected the shift cable last after removing the wheel, and that turned out not to be a great move 'cause once I had the wheel loose I was intrigued by the 'lock->' symbol on the cassette joint fixing ring which seemed to be holding the shifter cable in place but which actually led to the cassette joint sproinging apart. Fortunately Sheldon's site was there to help me put it all back together.

You should be able to download the hub and shifter information from the Shimano web site if not originally included with the bike, which it should have been IMO. Shifter cable installation and removal is covered in the shifter documentation IIRC.

Here's where you can find the user's manual for that hub:

this seems to be the manual for most of the 7 speed Nexus hubs:

Thanks!
This is the shifter documentation w/ cable removal instructions:
https://techdocs.shimano.com/media/te...9830605888.pdf
Glad to hear it was in the shifter rather than sifting through the documentation of the 14 or so 8 spd hubs.

One last bit of advice based on hard won experience: The Shimano manual suggests that you use a small allen key to insert into the small hole in the cassette joint so that it can then be rotated c-clockwise and the cable easily removed (and later reinstalled). This is absolutely, positively the way to go and I would suggest doing it 3 or 4 times in a row with adequate lighting as practice before you're actually stuck on the road with a flat. Like many other things in life it's easy once you know how.
