Vintage crank identification
Hey all,
I was recently given a 1980s (86 i think) cannondale road bike. The bike is 60cm, and way to big for me, but I want to use the crank on my commuter. Any ideas on what size BB i'll need? Also, is this a decent brand, i understand it is old, not really a concern for me.
here are some pics of the crank, all the info i know is this : Sugino GLP, the under side of the crankarm is labeled 170 1gc.

The 170 is the crank arm length in mm. 170 is standard. The 1 GC is probably a casting and/or date code.
The condition of the chainrings is what will determine whether it's okay to use. We need a pic of the other side. And get the bottom brackets, too. Why not use the same BB?

It's only got a single chain ring on it right now, and I unfortunately don't have a crank remover to get at the BB right now. I was thinking of buying a new ring for it anyhow.
I don't think i want to use the BB becuase it's probably older than me.

as we have stated in many other trheads there are two (well three) measurements for BBs.
one wether the BB shell is english or italian, 68 or 70. (atbs use a 73 with normally english cups) your cannondale likely has an english and provided your other frame is english it will fit
the other is spindle length which is determined by the model of crankset you will use. once you have your cranks off just use your calipers to measure it and that will tell the spindle lenght you need.
chances are it is a english BB with a 118 spindle probably asymetrical.
what will you do with the orphaned frame?

Then all you'll need are rings. For that you'll need to know the BCD(s) (Bolt Circle Diameter(s)) and count. Search BCD here for a link to how you can determine it with a ruler.
Now, that said, you may find that rings are fairly expensive. Check that out before you commit to the project. It may be cheaper and easier to buy a used crankset/BB off eBay.

I'm not sure what to do with the frame; it was great for riding around campus, but if it was more than 15 minutes I would be straining. Its a 60cm, I'm maybe 5'7 (at the most) and I lean the bike to get on it. I might sell it, I don't know. How much does an 1986 frame go for?
I was going to buy a SS crankset off ebay if this didn't work. I have an old 3 ring crank from my old bike, but I really want a setup with just the one ring.

Depends on the frame. Old gas-pipe frames are worthless. Others can go for as much as a car. I assume it's not the latter.
I can tell you this, though. It will be worth a lot more to someone if it's rideable. Start cannibalizing it and it will interest no one.

Is this one of those Sugino cranks with the combo big ring/spider permanently swaged onto the crankarm?

I say buy a very similar crankset on ebay for $30 or so, and keep the bike complete so you can sell it if you choose.

I'm going to try and cut the rivets off another crank i have, then if not, buy one of the colored anodized ones for 20$ off ebay

The Sugino GLP is a nice crankset and worthy of saving. The LP stands for Low Profile (I can't remember what the G stands for, sorry) and showed the trend in the 80's away from the Campy squarish crankarms with "milling" to a more "aero" shape. It was also sold as a Suntour Cylone crankset. If my memory serves me correctly, it required a 112 or 113 mm bottom bracket spindle, and most importantly, it did not use a JIS taper (like Shimano) but a Campy-compatible taper instead. Using a Shimano bb will not seat the crank properly and may actually damage the crank with riding. If possible (and to keep it on the cheap), re-use the original bb if it is in decent shape using new loose ball bearing and fresh grease. Those older bbs lasted forever with regular maintenance! Best of luck.
