Nuts! (Nexus/Alfine - Shimano)

More to the point, Acorn Nuts for use on Nexus or Alfine (Shimano) multi-speed hubs.

I have a fairly new Alfine hub on the rear of my commuter bike... just above 4,500 miles. When I upgraded to Alfine from my original Nexus hub, I simply re-used my original acorn nuts (chrome, nice looking closed end axle nuts).

I was having issues with the nuts loosening, then I noticed the threads have been stripping over time. No damage to the axle, it's the softer nut metal that gave way.

Getting those 10-1 metric chrome acorn nuts proved to be difficult. Went to several bike shops... nobody had them. I-Martin Cycles (LA, Beverly Blvd) knew exactly what I needed, didn't have them.... but were nice enough to get some ordered from Shimano. They gave me a call when the nuts arrived... perhaps they ordered a bunch for their shop. I was picking up some new tubes and other things... they didn't charge me for the new axle nuts (Nice!). They have good bike mechanics there and it's a good store.

Just to warn other people on the forum who use Nexus or Alfine multi-speed Shimano hubs.. or other brands for that matter... getting replacement nuts might involve a few steps. If you are running original nuts above 4,000 miles, perhaps give those threads a look. Don't get caught off guard like I did and watch that 15mm wrench take an unexpected spin.

Y'know, the whole issue with ACORN has gotten out of control.

If you don't mind a more conventional nut, 10 x 1mm axle nuts are available from any shop that orders from QBP. They sell really nice ones under their Problem Solvers brand- part number HU7100:

The trouble is that per my understanding the Shimano IGH axle threads are NOT 10mm. The Shimano parts list for the Alfine hub describes them as 3/8" cap nuts but does not list the thread pitch but 3/8" converts to 9.5mm. I wonder if Shimano went with Sturmey Archer axle threads on their IGH units originally and still use them?

Threaded axle Rohloff hubs and the SRAM iM9 and iM3 do use 10mm axle nuts per their manuals. The other SRAM IGH units use "FG 10.5" axle nuts per the SRAM parts lists.

Use of "almost fits right" nuts risks damage to axle threads.

It's very common size, 3/8"x26TPI. It is the standard size for older hubs.

I was in the shop the other day looking for 10x1mm track nuts. All they had in the drawer were 3/8x36tpi. They even looked at all the fixed gear hubs they had in stock, Dimension, Miche, Surly, etc, all were 3/8." They looked at their wheels and looked at all their new singlespeed bikes too. No 10mm solid axles to be found. Weird!

Campagnolo actually made hubs with 10mmx26tpi threading. Beware.

That's a good endorsement for I-Martin Cycles. Many other shops would either not known what you needed, or known, but not been willing to take the the time to order them, ordered them, but not bothered to call, or charged you $10 for the pair. They had at least four opportunities to take the easy way out, but chose to serve the customer. It's little things like that that separate a good shop from a bad shop.

OK, That's something I'm going to keep on file... Thanks for the link to the exploded view of my Alfine Hub.
