Trek 5500 Serial # Location
I have a Trek 5500 I bought 3rd hand. Its great, no complaints. The 2nd owner did not know the year it was built. He thought it was a 1999. It is black with grey downtube lettering and a top tube "5500" in black with red shadow.
I loooked all over the BB & could not find a serial number. The only number was on the left rear drop out and was 68334 - 2L.
The Vintage Trek web site was of no help. Can anyone id the year from the number??
TIA

Believe my old OCLV mountain bike also has the serial number on the dropout...
Year model is only so interesting, but perhaps if you contact Trek?

Depending upon the year, you need to be careful. The first couple years they had issues with the chainstays cracking right behind the BB-shell. The design was modified to have more material in that area. From the outside, the early and later frames look exactly the same. I'd check that serial# to see if your frame was an early or late model.
