removing the front dt shifter...
on and older cdale if i want to run a 1x7 setup what can i do to eliminate the dt shifter boss on one side? it unscrews but then leaves the other side unsecured...

Someone will have a better soulution then me I would bet, but I would just put a washer and the screw back in so that the other side is secure. You may need to find a shorter bolt to get this done right.
I find that doing 1X7 to not work super great less you leave the front derailure on to keep the chain from popping off the front cog, with out replaceing the chainring to a single speed version. So really all you get rid of is the down tube sifter and cable. Not much gained there, and chainrings cost like 20 -50 bucks.

it varies from bike to bike, but you usually don't need a chain guard to stop the chain from jumping, as schnayke was talking about.
A set of short stack chain-ring bolts costs about $10, or less if you have access to a bench grinder. those will allow you to use your current chainring (if it's the right size).
As far as the downtube shifter boss, well there's really nothing to be done. It's brazed onto the frame pretty securely. You can file it off, or just grab it with pliers and twist, but you do so at the risk of damaging your frame, inuring the wrath of the community and never being able to mount a front derailer again.
Alternatively, find something nice to cover it up, a bell works great.

Is this one of the earlier C'dales that used the threaded rod through the down tube to mount the shifter bosses?
I guess you could shorten the threaded rod and screw some sort of nut to the non-drive side, but I would not cut the rod as I would want to keep the option of putting the front shifter back on one day. Perhaps you could find a long screw with the same threading and use that.

On some model Cannondale and Klein frames the downtube bosses were just fastened through a hole in the downtube using a through-bolt that threaded into the bosses. Nothing was brazed or welded.

as described, this is the style with the hole and threaded rod.
also, i have been using this* bike as a 1x7 for a year with no form of chain retention at the front, the front der is removed and im using the 52t. i have been known to jump curbs aggressively, even on 23s, and have never dropped the chain.
so do i just have to find some combo of o-rings/washers/nuts and try to make it work or does someone sell a product?
*not really this bike but one just like it.
this is the bike, a 91 SR600 road i was using as a 1x7
and this 90 SR600 crit[which has been sitting dismantled for a year in the basement] is getting built up in similar fashion, only nicer, to take over commute duties as i am selling the black cdale frame[60cm - i will ship ]
also, i know it looked great here and i should have never torn it down... anyway...
