27 to 700c. Freewhell to Cassette. 6 speed to 8. Will I need a new rear derailleur?
I'm going to get a new wheelset for my 1981 Schwinn Voyageur 11.8. Probably gonna go with a Shimano 105 laced to CR18 from VO. The bike has Shimano Altus derailleurs that work fine. Will the rear derailleur have plenty of travel to accomodate the extra cogs?
I will have the frame cold set to get the spacing from 120mm to the required 130mm.

Bike companies will often tell you need new stuff, either because they never try the old-new combo and can't guarantee it will work, or because they want you to buy more stuff.
With every single shimano derailleur I've tried from the early 80's on, the travel is plenty. The only issues with derailleurs usually involve using indexed systems. If you use friction shifters, by the way, you could probably even run a 10-speed chain and cassette with your current set up. EDIT: But I would stick with the 8.

Your gonna need new front/rear Derailleur, new shifters, brakes, brake levers, cassette, wheels, chain, I dont see why you wouldn't get a new crank at this point.

He he. It's OK. The E-motes aren't universally understood.
It's not about the extra travel but the shifters that connect to it. If you shifters are not designed to work with that derailleur it will work, but you will NEVER be able to properly dune it. Though if you use a friction shifting module, it should be MUCH easier.

Death fork? Naaaah!!
If he sticks with the OEM friction shifters (and the OP did not indicate he was changing them) he'll be just fine.

I will indeed be keeping the friction shifters. If I upgraded I would get some nice bar-end shifters, but I'm on the friction side of the fence for good I imagine.
