Max tire size?
 

I was wondering what the max tire size is that would fit on a rim designed for a stock 26x1.95 tire? I want to put a wider/larger tire on my 1994 Spec. Stump jumper ht FS. How big can I go?

Realistically, with most 26" mountain bike rims, a larger tire size is only limited by frame clearance.

That's what I was wondering, wether the rim or the frame clearance was the limiting factor.

it might be 2.35. most of xc bike has rims for xc purposes. so, max would be 2.25~2.35

On my bike, I have to deflate the rear tire to pull the wheel out of the frame. On the front, I don't have toe clip clearance. Oh yeah, road bike.

I wouldn't bet on it. You really need to check tire clearance with the chain on the granny chainring. On lots of bikes the limiting factor is front derailleur clearance with the tire's side knobs. I've seen lots of XC mountain bikes that wouldn't take a 2.1.

As far as what the rim will hold, check the Sheldon Brown site. He has an excellent chart on rims versus tire size.

Thanks for the replies. I went to the LBS testerday thinking I wanted to get a FS bike, but after pricing them and getting on one I'm not so sure. They feel so big and awkward compared to my HT. I thought maybee I'd go with a larger tire than 1.95 to add some plushness. It seems all the bike I looked at 2.x tires.
