removing decals
hello all,
sorry for the fairly dumb, strange question of how do you remove decals from the frame of your bike? I have a carbon frame and am scared of messing with the chemistry of the material. I tried goo gone but that didnt do it so I thought i would ask here. thanks! -john |
are the decals under or over the clear coat?
|
If the decals are on top of the clear coat, use a hairdryer to heat them up first, than peel them back slowly
|
I used a cheap heat gun from harbor freight tools and It took them right off. I wouldnt mess with it if its under the clear coat though

over the coat
the decals are, for sure, over the coat. some have already started to peel on their own. the tubes on my bike are carbon. will heating them up with a hair drier warp/mess with the frame at all?

You only want to heat them enough to soften the adhesive that holds them to the tubes. Just take it easy and be careful.

I removed the labels from my TREK by slowly pulling them off. Try to get the adhesive to come off with the label. What adhesive is left, just use some warm water and a soft rag and lightly rub. I left the labels ( serial number and something else?? ) on the bottom of the bottom bracket. Good thing I did. With TREK, when you register the bike for any warranty claims. TREK mentions that the serial # label has got to be on the bike for a valid claim.
Edit: Just looked to see where I had read about the serial # being in place for a warranty claim. It is actually on the serial # sticker on the bottom bracket. It says warranty is void if removed. However, this sticker is under the clear coat. |
As long as you are only using a hair dryer to heat up the decals then you should be fine

Sorry to jump off topic, but when did Trek stop stamping their serial numbers on the frame?
